Black Lines in Your Carpet Near the Baseboards?

Those lines you see near the baseboards are called Filtration Lines, or also known as Filtration Soiling. Before you panic, it probably isn’t mold or water. Your home needs the ability to “breathe.” There are pressure changes in your home as it ages. You’ll probably notice that when you shut one door in your home another one moves. You may notice pressure changes when the heat or air conditioning turn on or off. Your home also experiences pressure increases when it is hot and decreases when it is cold. This expansion and contraction of air pressure will seek the path of least resistance; often, this path is where the floor and the wall meet.

When your home “breathes,” the little microscopic particles get trapped in your carpet. Don’t worry, they’re really easy to clean!

So, why is it black or gray?

Microsoiling. This is where microscopic soil and soot build as the air passes through. Carpet fibers attract dust and other particles, because the rough texture allows it to stick. These microscopic particles come from activities inside the home over long periods of time.
